Courses for new on-ice officials are generally held in the off season (ie. May to August)
So far in 2008, we have held courses in Guildford and Nottingham, and as soon as further courses are confirmed, details will be posted here.
Some general course details and answers to frequently asked questions are shown below.

GENERAL LEVEL 1 ON-ICE OFFICIALS COURSE DETAILS
The Level 1 course is targeted at people who would like to become an ON-ICE OFFICIAL, who have had no previous on-ice official training, or who have been an official outside the UK and wish to officiate in England and Wales.
The course does not teach delegates how to skate, and expects candidates to already be able to skate to a reasonable standard.
To this effect, the course incorporates some SIMPLE skating tests as follows:
- Skate: Forwards - hockey stop left / forwards - hockey stop right
- Skate: Backwards - stop with left skate / then stop with right skate
- Skate: Forwards - turn to backwards left and right
- Skate: Backwards - turn to forwards left and right
The bulk of the day is classroom teaching of linesman procedures and on-ice positioning. At the end of the day, again depending on the time of year and the venue, there will be on ice practice, and or, on ice participation in a junior U10's game, either a league game or challenge match.
You will need to bring with you to the course, the following items:
- Pen & Paper
- Ice Hockey Skates
- Ice Hockey Helmet (with half or no visor) (note: you will not be able to participate in the on-ice elements without a helmet. One can be borrowed if you let us know you don't have one)
- Loose fitting jogging bottoms etc. preferably black.
- Recommended items: Shin Pads, elbow pads, Girdle, protective cup
There is no rules test or fitness testing on the Level 1 course
The current cost of the course is £47 which includes the purchase of an official Acme officiating whistle, and this must be paid in full by cheque prior to the day of the course (further details provided upon enrolment)
Dress-code for the day is "Casual".
There is no strict minimum age for becoming an on-ice official, but in general applicants should be at least 10 years old.
To enrol on a course, you need to send an E-mail to: stating which course you wish to attend, your name, age, home town and a contact telephone number, upon which further details will be sent to you.
All delegates must enrol prior to the course date, and may not just turn up on the day.
